Hi there, Odysseus and Shannon. Yes, we do some work with medieval weapons in class, though we focus on the Filipino martial arts concepts of GM Rene Latosa. However, a few of us are involved in historical European groups around Seattle and we can connect you once you guys move out here. Or, just email us at contact@seattle-escrima.org and we can follow up.

Hello. My wife and I are moving to Seattle 'somewhere' (we don't know where yet, we will be in temp corporate accommodation) and will be looking for a German tradition club to get involved with. I'm surprised to see an escrima club doing some longsword. I've been in touch with a guy from 7 Swords club down in Tacoma, but it depends on where we end up. Though I'm no longsword specialist (I fight 1.33 Sword & Buckler and so does my wife) I have done quite a bit of it, though I'm far more struck with S&B. Okay...this message was just to let ya know that we are heading in your direction in early September and hope to pay you a visit at the very least. :-)

Thanks so much for writing such a thoughtful and insightful piece, Andrew. I'm still very much getting my feet wet, so to speak, but after a bit over a year of training with the club, I've consistently noticed your ability to identify the proper developmental concerns of both the group and its individuals. You and Eric are such great teachers and resources. In truth, everybody has taught me something.

Your post is well-suited to the newer group of students, but the timing is also just right for me - I needed to hear some of these things now in order to improve certain areas of my focus. Watching some of the advanced folks engage really indicates how much communication takes place in legitimate sparring - it's a treat to observe and, gradually, to learn. Thanks again for the insights.

Andrew,

Greetings from the Philippines

I am very pleased to hear of your (relatively) new venture. You had a profound effect on my own training and it's great to read you are still sharing your knowledge with committed martial artists.

I've read through thizs website and am loving the typical "No B.S - let's train!" message it exudes.

I wish the Seattle Escrima club the very best for the future,

Simon McMahon - Bahad Zu'bu Philippines
